Santa Rosa
Quietly grand. Old-money Italian restraint rather than flashy resort luxury. Dark antiques, Jerusalem stone bathrooms, hand-picked furniture from the owner's travels across Italy. The monastery atmosphere is genuinely felt — not just marketed.
Request rooms Nymphaea or Vinea — they sit at the end of the upper corridor right beside a large shared sea-view terrace that feels semi-private
Why It Matters
Italy's most dramatic cliffside pool, a Michelin-starred restaurant (Il Refettorio) using produce from the monastery's own terraced garden, a spa that won Tatler's Best New Spa award, and 17th-century vaulted ceilings throughout. Jackie Kennedy used to lunch where the Citrus suite terrace now sits. Only 20 rooms total.
A 17th-century Dominican monastery perched on a sheer cliff above the Bay of Salerno in the tiny fishing village of Conca dei Marini, converted in 2012 into a 20-room adults-only luxury hotel and spa by its American owner, Bianca. The building hasn't been gutted and modernized — it's been respectfully restored, with the nuns' original cells now serving as bedrooms, vaulted stone ceilings intact. Every single room looks at the sea, the Michelin-starred restaurant hangs over the Gulf of Salerno, and the infinity pool disappears into the horizon at the lowest cliff edge. There's no beach — this is strictly a clifftop retreat, with steps everywhere and a winding road between you and everything else.

How you'll actually spend your days.
All guests have complimentary daily access to the full thermal suite — stone sauna, aromatic steam room, hydrotherapy pool, crushed ice fountain, tepidarium lounge, and emotion showers. Open 10:30–20:00 every day. One of the best included perks at any Amalfi Coast hotel.
Private luxury transfer to Pompeii with a private guide and priority access to the excavation sites including recently unveiled areas. Followed by a paired lunch at a vineyard on volcanic land adjoining Pompeii. On return, a Michelin-starred dinner designed by Chef Crescenzo inspired by ancient Roman cuisine, plus a volcanic spa treatment (Vesuvian-stone or volcanic clay wrap).
A guided 2–3 hour hike through otherwise inaccessible parts of the Amalfi Coast with a local expert. Starts a 5-minute shuttle from the hotel. Includes a rustic farm-to-table lunch experience mid-hike. The Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) is the highlight trail in the area — one of the most dramatic walks in Italy, passing above the coast with views from Positano to Capri.
An open-air fitness center equipped with Technogym equipment, positioned within the terraced gardens with natural sea breezes and sea views. Small but functional for a cliffside retreat.
The hotel concierge arranges private boat hire for day trips along the coast — Positano, Capri, the Emerald Grotto. Particularly recommended by the hotel's own Mr & Mrs Smith review. Arriving back at the property by boat and looking up at the monastery on its cliff is one of those moments.
The Convivio Terrace can host up to 35 people for private dinners, cocktail parties, or small wedding receptions. Chef Crescenzo creates tailor-made menus; the sommelier designs wine pairings. The view across the Bay of Salerno at night is the backdrop.
