Monsieur Didot
Athenian neoclassical meets bookish-bohemian. Think herringbone oak floors, curated bookshelves, secret doors, verdant houseplants, and hand-painted ceilings — all grounded by earthy, wet-plaster tones and pale blues on the exterior. Intimate and literary rather than slick hotel.
Book The Sonnet for the carved marble fireplace and the hidden bookcase door to the bathroom — a genuine showstopper
Why It Matters
One of Athens's most distinctive small stays — a listed neoclassical building with only six individually named rooms (The Tale, The Novel, The Ballad, The Sonnet, The Anthem, The Ode), winner of the Big See Interior Design Award 2020. John Lennon and Yoko Ono reportedly spent time in this very house during an incognito visit to Athens. Tablet Hotels member.
Monsieur Didot is a six-room neoclassical residence from 1890 in Athens' cultured Kolonaki quarter, named for Ambroise Firmin Didot — the French philhellene whose family pioneered printing in newly independent Greece. Civil engineers-turned-hoteliers Natalia Georgopoulou and Margarita Papaioannou restored the two-storey mansion with design studio BaBatchas, preserving soaring hallways, hand-painted ceilings, a rare solid marble balcony, vintage mosaics, and carved fireplaces while layering in bespoke furniture and polished concrete bathrooms. It calls itself a residence, and it means it: six rooms, a rooftop terrace, and a team that treats you like a friend staying over.
