Morgan’s Rock Reserve & Ecolodge
Barefoot luxury ecolodge — open-air treehouses, working hacienda farm, deep conservation ethos. Rustic in the best sense: dark wood, thatched roofs, rope-hung daybeds. Think Pacific wilderness safari, not a resort pool party.

Why It Matters
One of Central America's original ecolodges, opened in 2004 on what was then 350 acres of beachfront before expanding to 4,000 acres. It's a fully functioning hacienda: dairy cows, organic gardens, a sustainable shrimp farm — together supplying roughly 60% of the restaurant's ingredients. Half the property is a formal private nature reserve. Three monkey species roam the grounds. Member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World.
Thirteen kilometers from San Juan del Sur, perched 30–100 feet above its own private crescent-shaped beach on Nicaragua's Pacific coast, Morgan's Rock occupies 4,000 acres of jungle, working farmland, and protected reserve. The 15 bungalows and 3 two-bedroom villas are three-sided treehouses set into a cliff face, open to the forest, cooled by a low-impact microclimate system, and reached by crossing a 110-meter hanging suspension bridge. No TVs, no room phone, no pillow menu. What's here instead: howler monkeys at dawn, a sunrise shrimp harvest, strong Nicaraguan coffee, a beachfront spa, and a wave-lapped beach that nesting sea turtles also call home.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Guided walk from the lodge to where the estuary meets the beach just after sunrise. The estuary is active with resident and migratory species. Scarlet macaws, herons, egrets, hummingbirds, and many more.
Guided quest into the reserve to track all three Nicaraguan monkey species: howler, spider, and white-faced capuchin. Sloth sightings are the bonus prize.
Ride through the tropical forest on named horses (Pirata, Lucero, Chavalo, Calcetín, Califa, or Rosillo). Chances to spot monkeys, sloths, and tropical birds along the trails.
17 platforms with views across the San Juan del Sur region. Operated near the property for guests seeking an adrenaline spike above the canopy.
Guided hikes through dry riverbeds and nature trails exploring the property's biodiversity: tropical birds, reptiles, dry forest plants. Night walks reveal a completely different ecosystem. One of the most memorable experiences on offer.
Paddle tandem kayaks through the 1.5 km estuary and mangrove forest at sunrise or sunset. Overhanging foliage, exotic birds, and the kind of quiet that city people forget exists.
Complimentary SUP boards for use in the sheltered bay. The crescent shape of the cove keeps conditions relatively calm.
Swim with Pacific species in the warm, clear water off the private beach. Gear available on-site.
Transport to nearby Playa Maderas — a world-class surf break about 15–20 minutes away. Lessons for beginners; experienced surfers can head out independently.
Complimentary mountain bikes available to explore the private reserve trails on two wheels. A good way to cover more ground and see wildlife at your own pace.
Full-day excursion to San Juan de Oriente for ceramics, Catarina overlook, Masaya market and volcano, lunch in Granada, and a boat tour of the 365 Isletas de Granada on Lake Nicaragua.
Offshore trolling for tuna, sailfish, and roosterfish, or reef fishing for grouper, snapper, and barracuda aboard a 36 ft Luhrs sportfisherman. Spearfishing gear also available.
The most demanding hike on the property — the Palo de Pluma road leads to the highest point on all 4,000 acres. Spectacular panoramic views. Bring proper hiking shoes.
Join the active 1,100-hectare reforestation project and plant a native tree. Each species feeds specific animals — Jicaro for squirrels, Guapinol for sloths.
Visit the working dairy farm, milk cows, gather eggs, meet the animals, and cook a traditional breakfast including fresh handmade tortillas on a wood hearth with Denia. A genuine farm-to-table morning.
Board one of the lodge's boats from the private beach for a sunset cruise with drinks, watching the Pacific light show from the water.
Short hike up from the private beach to a premier viewpoint overlooking the Pacific. Best done at the end of the day. Easy enough for most fitness levels.
Excursion to La Flor Nature Reserve (30 km south) during mass turtle arrivals — sometimes thousands arrive at once. Also possible to witness nesting or hatching on Morgan's Rock's own private beach year-round.
4,300+ sq ft open-air yoga deck with hardwood floors under a palm-thatched palapa roof, open on all sides to the forest. Accommodates up to 90 students — used for retreats and regular sessions.
Amenities & Practical Info
The details that matter for planning.
A mile-long crescent-shaped bay on the Pacific. The natural shape of the cove inhibits rip tides, making swimming safer than most Pacific beaches in the area. Beach cabanas with hammocks, swings, lounge chairs — and food/drink service from the Beach Bar.
Available throughout hotel areas, but connectivity is intentionally limited — part of the digital detox appeal. Don't expect urban bandwidth.
Hosts intimate weddings, wellness retreats, and private events using the private beach, panoramic viewpoints, and hacienda grounds. Customizable menus and activities.
Not 24 hours — plan accordingly if arriving late.
900-hectare private nature reserve plus 1,100-hectare active reforestation project. The rest is low-impact farmland. Home to three monkey species, sea turtles, sloths, anteaters, and hundreds of bird species.
The property's main shared pool overlooks the Pacific Ocean and private beach. Surrounded by jungle. Connected to the La Bastide restaurant and Commodore Bar.
One of the lodge's signature features — a 110-meter suspension bridge connecting the bungalows to the main lodge/restaurant area, with views over the forest canopy and beach below.
All guests have free use of tandem kayaks, mountain bikes, SUP boards, and boogie boards — no sign-up fees or hourly charges.
Property runs on solar energy and uses 'Evening Breeze' microclimate systems in bungalows instead of traditional A/C — circulates cool air around the bed for comfortable sleeping without the carbon cost.
Open-air hardwood yoga deck under a palm-thatched palapa roof, open on all sides to the forest. Retreat capacity up to 90 students.
