Mount Falcon Country House Hotel
Victorian Gothic country estate meets modern Irish hospitality. Turf fires, exposed stonework and period furniture in the main house; the lodges feel more like upscale holiday cottages. Warm and genuinely family-run rather than corporate-slick.
Book the falconry hawk walk early — it sells out, especially in summer
Why It Matters
One of Mayo's most activity-rich country estates — falconry, salmon fishing, clay pigeon shooting, golf driving range, and a full Elemis spa under one roof. The Kitchen Restaurant holds 2 AA Rosettes. The 45 self-catering lodges (with fireplaces and underfloor heating) are rare for an Irish country house hotel at this level.
Built in 1876 as a wedding gift, Mount Falcon is a Victorian Gothic manor house sitting on 100 acres of mature woodland along the west bank of the River Moy. The Maloney family run it today and have leaned into the estate's natural assets hard: there's a working falconry, 2 miles of private salmon fishing, a serious Elemis spa with a pool that juts into the woodland, and a 2 AA Rosette restaurant inside the original Victorian kitchen. The 32 hotel rooms in the old house are matched by 45 self-catering lodges dotted through the grounds — a smart move that gives groups and families something the manor rooms alone couldn't.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A broader introduction to the on-site falconry, including owls and other birds of prey alongside hawks. Good for those who want to learn about the birds rather than purely walking with one.
Walk through the estate's woodland with a trained hawk on the glove, guided by the on-site falconers. A hands-on experience that works equally well for adults and older children.
On-estate clay pigeon shooting range. Good for corporate events and groups as well as individual guests.
A 9-bay on-site driving range for warming up or practising. The estate is also a well-placed base for nearby championship links courses: Enniscrone Golf Links, Carne Golf Links, and County Sligo Golf Club are all within an hour's drive.
The estate's working kitchen garden supplies produce directly to the restaurant. Guests can meet the gardener and his bees — an informal but genuinely interesting visit if you're curious about how the food chain works here.
The hotel holds 2 miles of private fishing on the River Moy — Ireland's most prolific salmon river. Guests can also fish the on-site stocked trout lake. The 'Catch and Cook' programme means the kitchen will prepare your catch if you land one. Fishing licences can be arranged through the hotel.
3km of marked forest trails for walking or cycling through the mature deciduous woodland. Routes pass along the river bank between Foxford and Ballina. A megalithic tomb and historic graveyard are hidden within the grounds — worth tracking down.
Amenities & Practical Info
The details that matter for planning.
Private dining options include The Kitchen Restaurant, The Aldridge Suite, The Fuller Room, and The Board Room.
Turf fire in the main lobby — a genuine Irish welcome, not a decorative one.
Air-conditioned gym with Life Fitness machines and free weights.
The headline amenity: a 17-metre heated indoor pool with full glass walls on one side that look directly into the surrounding woodland. The pool physically projects into the forest edge — visually striking and genuinely pleasant to swim in.
On-site electric vehicle charging points — useful given the rural location.
