Muir, a Luxury Collection Hotel, Halifax
Maritime luxury meets contemporary Canadian design. Warm, intimate scale — more like a well-curated boutique than a grand flagship. Art-forward, with rotating gallery exhibitions and commissioned works throughout. Cozy but genuinely polished.
Book the halotherapy salt room in advance — it's a 15-minute experience with a salt spray machine and fills up quickly
Why It Matters
Atlantic Canada's first Luxury Collection property, and still the only true five-star hotel in Halifax. Recognized by both Forbes Travel Guide and the Michelin Guide. The combination of direct ocean access, a working private yacht, a full wellness centre, and a secret speakeasy is genuinely unusual at this scale.
Halifax's first proper luxury hotel sits right on the Queen's Marque waterfront, and it earns that distinction. Designed by celebrated local firm MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects, the building uses salt-and-pepper granite, sandstone, and Muntz metal — a copper alloy from the shipbuilding trade — so every surface feels rooted in the Maritime. Inside, Studio Munge fitted the 109 rooms with curved white oak walls, walnut plank flooring, and original Nova Scotia art. It's a boutique hotel with real ambition: the Windward Wellness centre alone runs 5,000 square feet, and the private 36-foot yacht moored outside is bookable through the front desk.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles available for exploring the Halifax waterfront boardwalk and surrounding downtown area.
A sound bath experience in Windward Wellness on the second Sunday of each month. Singing bowls, gongs, and healing vibrations in an intimate group setting.
A 45-minute class every Friday at 8:30am in the darkened yoga room. Blends half-yin and half-flow yoga with ocean soundscapes and subtle marine scents, finishing with a guided water-inspired meditation. A good way to start a day on the water.
A Luxury Collection Epicurean Moment unique to Muir — a daily toast timed to Halifax's historic Noon Gun tradition, connecting guests to a piece of the city's living history.
Every Thursday evening in True Colours, Muir's private on-site art gallery. Guests receive a complimentary glass of local wine and a light bite while the in-house curator walks through the current exhibition and explains how the collection connects to Nova Scotia's cultural landscape.
Monthly artist talks at True Colours Art Gallery (2nd floor of Muir). Guests meet local artists, see the latest exhibition, and hear the stories behind the work. Part of Muir's commitment to being a genuine cultural platform for the region.
Kayaks available directly from the hotel's waterfront location. The hotel's direct ocean access makes this genuinely practical — you can be on the water within minutes of leaving your room.
Scheduled excursions on Muir's 36-foot Morris yacht along Halifax Harbour and the coastline. Options include a trip to George's Island National Historic Site to explore underground tunnels and historic fortifications, or a cruise along the Northwest Arm past magnificent waterfront homes. Light refreshments and sparkling beverages on board. Available May through October — bookable through the front desk.
High-speed 24-foot motorboat tours exploring the dozens of bays and coves throughout Halifax's historic harbour. A faster, more kinetic alternative to the yacht. Available May through October.
A hands-on cocktail class held in the secret speakeasy BKS every Saturday from 3:30–5pm. Led by Muir's beverage director, the session covers Atlantic Canada's cocktail heritage — from local rum-running history to modern craft spirits. Guests craft their own cocktails, experiment with technique, and receive a small canapé. The bar opens for the evening immediately after.
