Why It Matters
Michelin One Key in both 2024 and 2025, World's Best New Ski Hotel 2024 (World Ski Awards), and Robb Report Hong Kong Best of the Best 2026. One of the very few new ski properties anywhere to earn Michelin recognition in its debut year. The on-site hot spring water is sourced from the resort's own grounds — genuinely rare even in Japan.
MUWA NISEKO opened December 15, 2023 and immediately redefined what a ski hotel in Japan can be. Sitting at the highest point of Hirafu's Upper Village, you step out of the first-floor ski center and you're on Grand Hirafu's slopes within seconds. The building itself draws on tsumairi gabled rooflines and engawa veranda principles — the architecture feels genuinely rooted here rather than imported. Two Tokyo dining institutions brought their Michelin-starred playbooks north: HITO by TACUBO for wood-fired Italian, and Sukiyaki HIYAMA for premium Wagyu sukiyaki. Then there's the seventh-floor onsen complex: four private baths fed by natural hot spring water sourced from the resort's own grounds, with views of Mt. Yotei that stop conversation mid-sentence.

This is where the MUWA wellness philosophy really comes alive in the room itself. The Signature variant adds ski-in/ski-out access. All have 2 twin beds plus a Murphy bed.

135.5–168.2 sqm, sleeping up to 6. The 3 Bedroom Suite with Onsen (168.2 sqm) is the top variant here — genuinely expansive, with a private outdoor bath. The Signature 3 Bedroom Suite (141.7–153.4 sqm) has direct ski-in/ski-out room access. Floor-to-ceiling windows, separate living areas, and Nanodron air purifiers standard at this level.

269.8–313.2 sqm with floor-to-ceiling windows and private outdoor terraces. Three variants: Annupuri & Hirafu (313.2 sqm), Hirafu Village (294.8 sqm), and Annupuri (269.8 sqm). Sleeps up to 8. Private sauna and outdoor rotenburo at this level. The views of the slopes and Mt. Yotei from here are the main event.

At this level you get 3 twin rooms plus a king, separate living and dining areas, full kitchen, and private onsen access in the top variants.

The top of the house. Two variants — Yotei (399 sqm) and Annupuri (411.3 sqm) — both sleeping up to 10 guests across 3 twin and 2 king bedrooms. Private sauna, private outdoor onsen, separate living and dining areas, full kitchen, and private outdoor terrace. The Yotei faces Mt. Yotei directly. This is chalet-level space with hotel service.

The entry point at MUWA. Still 45–50.6 sqm, which is generous by any standard. Minimalist interiors with warm timber, mountain views, and a fully equipped kitchen. The Signature Deluxe Twin variant has direct ski-in/ski-out access from the room — worth the upgrade if you are a serious skier. All rooms include Slumberland mattresses, air purifier, and the full kitchen setup.

The King Suite with Onsen (99.8 sqm) is a step up — private open-air rotenburo bath right in the suite. The Premier King Suite hits 90–117 sqm. The Signature King Suite variant adds ski-in/ski-out room access. All have a king bed plus a Murphy bed.

Grand Hirafu is the largest of Niseko United's four linked mountains, which together offer 30+ named runs, extensive off-piste terrain, and annual snowfall consistently exceeding 15 metres. The hotel sits at the very top of Hirafu's Upper Village. Access is via gondola and two ski lifts adjacent to the property.
