Naoshima Ryokan Roka
Modern Japanese luxury ryokan meets contemporary art gallery. Spare, serene, and intentional. No TVs, but there's a Bluetooth speaker, a mini-bar stocked with complimentary drinks, and original artworks in every room. The architect — Hironori Fujioka of Okayama-based nottuo Inc. — drew from the traditional nagaya row-house form, creating two buildings connected by a covered walkway on the site of a former rice field.

Why It Matters
First authentic luxury ryokan on Naoshima, awarded 1 Michelin Key in both 2024 and 2025. The property functions simultaneously as a hotel, contemporary art gallery, and artist incubator through the Roka Art Project. Guests can buy works directly from the suites.
Naoshima Ryokan Roka opened in April 2022 as the first full-fledged luxury ryokan on Japan's famous art island. All 11 rooms are suites with private open-air baths, natural materials sourced from the Seto Inland Sea region, and rotating original artwork on the walls. The whole place operates as a contemporary art incubator as much as a hotel — every suite displays commissioned works by emerging Japanese artists, curated by a Kyoto University of the Arts professor. Dinner at Restaurant EN is a serious kaiseki affair led by two Kyoto-trained chefs, and café-bar Moya is the only venue on the island that stays open past 9pm.

BRUNO e-tool power-assisted electric bicycles available exclusively for staying guests. Ideal for navigating Naoshima's hilly terrain to reach the Chichu Art Museum, Benesse House, Lee Ufan Museum, and Yellow Pumpkin sculpture. 8 bikes available.
A custom-built outdoor firepit with a cypress wrap-around counter, cypress bench seating, and a sheltering roof situated between the guest suites and the restaurant wing. The name translates literally as 'haven of immeasurable delights.' Guests, locals, and visiting artists gather here after dinner for drinks and conversation under the night sky. Drinks from Moya can be brought out to the firepit. Complimentary for guests.
A private glamping experience on Kujira-jima, a small uninhabited island off the calm Seto Inland Sea coast. Arranged through Roka during your stay.
Curated by Shigeo Goto, professor at Kyoto University of the Arts, the Roka Art Project places original commissioned works throughout all common spaces and in each of the 11 guest suites. Semi-annual solo exhibitions (spring and autumn) display new works in the suites, all available for purchase — staying guests get first priority before online sales. Permanent collection includes works by internationally recognized sculptor Kohei Nawa and photographers Daisuke Yokota, Ryo Shinagawa, Shohei Yamamoto, Kohei Yamada, and Masafumi Shigeta.
Staff-led walkthrough of the facility's art collection and architecture. Available as part of curated experience packages, notably through Wabunka. A deeper introduction to the Roka Art Project, the building's design philosophy, and the surrounding landscape than a self-guided wander provides.
The front garden designed by architect Hironori Fujioka and built by Kei Amano, featuring classic karesansui (dry garden) raked gravel alongside a unique micro rice field — a symbol of plenty. A permanent interactive light installation by Creative Company 1→10 responds to global events in real time, triggering a programmed light-and-music show in the garden plants after dark.
Chartered catamaran cruise departing from Naoshima to neighboring art islands Inujima and Teshima. Available during your stay through Roka. The Seto Inland Sea island circuit is a popular way to experience the wider Setouchi art region beyond Naoshima.
Luxury catamaran yacht rental for a cruise on the Seto Inland Sea at sunset. Arranged through Roka during your stay.
