Why It Matters
The 'sliding room#' contemporary art project gives every room its own original artwork — not reproductions, not prints, actual commissioned pieces from eight international artists. The building itself is an architectural statement, a black acute-triangular form in a valley that's been inhabited since the Stone Age. It also holds a Green Key sustainability certification and targets near-zero energy balance through photovoltaics and trigeneration.
A sharp black triangle of a building jutting out of the Val Lagarina, Mercure Nerocubo Rovereto is a 4-star design hotel that takes its art seriously. Every one of its 101 rooms carries original work from the 'sliding room#' project — 118 pieces by eight international artists placed site-specifically throughout the building. The architecture is deliberately striking: asymmetrical and angular on the outside, cool and minimal inside with concrete, wood, and glass doing most of the work.
