Greek cultural motifs — Karagiozis shadow puppets, evil eye iconography, old Athenian postcard collages — surface everywhere, assembled by the Campanas and a team of Greek postgraduate students. The lobby walls are covered in mosaics made from salvaged wood scraps that echo the famous Favela Chair. It's intense, but the rooms are actually comfortable.

Why It Matters
The first-ever hotel project by the Campana Brothers, and one of the most discussed design hotels in southern Europe. The concept of using every single element from a demolished hotel to build something radically new — rather than gutting and replacing — is genuinely rare. Also one of the best rooftop views in central Athens.
The New Hotel is what happens when a Greek Cypriot art collector, Dakis Joannou, decides to tear apart a tired 1958 modernist block and put it back together as something nobody's seen before. He hired Brazilian design legends Fernando and Humberto Campana — famous for making masterpieces out of cast-offs — and nothing from the old Olympic Palace Hotel went to waste. Chairs, beams, doors, stone: all of it reappears as vivid in-room art installations across 79 rooms and suites. The result is genuinely difficult to describe, but very easy to remember. Opened in 2011 and still feels fresh.

The top of the house at 65–70 sqm. Custom-made carpets, handpicked furnishings, and the Campana aesthetic pushed to its absolute limit. The wraparound terrace is the selling point: 360° views taking in the Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, Syntagma Square, and the Hellenic Parliament. The only room in the hotel where you really need to pause and take it in. Up to 3 guests.

The entry-level rooms run 23 sqm — compact but smartly arranged. Many look out over Lycabettus Hill; those facing Filellinon Street get more street noise but a livelier vibe. Each is individually designed around an art theme (Postcards or Evil Eye, for instance). Bamboo floors, floor-to-ceiling windows, and the Campanas' signature salvaged-material aesthetic throughout.

A generous step up at 30 sqm. Most Studios sit on street corners, which means views of either the Russian Church of Sotira Lykodimou (Athens' largest medieval building) or the National Gardens. There's a proper sitting area, and they can take a third guest. The corner positioning makes them feel bigger than the number suggests.

The same 23–25 sqm footprint as Superiors, but most of these look out to Lycabettus Hill — the better view in the house for non-suite categories. The Campana design feels more pronounced here, with richer material choices.
