Why It Matters
One of Madrid's most historically rich hotels — opened by the Swedish royal family, frequented by Hemingway and Guevara, and home to a genuinely excellent speakeasy bar (the Hemingway/Clandestino) that you reach by walking through the restaurant bathrooms. The rooftop Ático bar is also one of the better terrace views in central Madrid.
This is where Spain and Sweden got confused in the best possible way. The building opened in 1956 as a hub for the Swedish royal family and Madrid's intellectual set — Hemingway drank here regularly, Che Guevara stayed here, and during the 1981 coup attempt, locals and politicians sought shelter inside. Renovated in 2016, it now packs 123 rooms across 10 floors just off Gran Vía, with a speakeasy cocktail bar hidden behind the restrooms and a rooftop that delivers proper 360-degree views over the city.
