Why It Matters
A Small Luxury Hotels of the World member and National Geographic Traveller-featured property, set in one of the UK's most architecturally intact Georgian streetscapes — a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The heritage protection means no lift and no AC, but that same protection preserves the extraordinary original fabric that makes the place special. The on-site restaurant, Blackwoods Edinburgh, holds a Taste Our Best accreditation and uses a Josper charcoal grill.
Two Grade A listed Georgian townhouses built in 1823 by William Playfair, on a quiet cobbled street in Edinburgh's New Town. Nira Caledonia was once home to literary figure John Wilson — the hedonistic 19th-century essayist who wrote as Christopher North — and the hotel leans into that heritage hard. Original cornices, traditional sash windows, spiral staircases, and embossed tartan patterns sit alongside Nespresso machines and L'Occitane toiletries. Twenty-six individually styled rooms, no lift, no air conditioning. And it works.
