Octant Douro is a modernist hotel built into the terraced hillside of Castelo de Paiva, right at km 41 of the Douro River. Schist and glass construction lets the landscape do the talking: floor-to-ceiling windows, cantilevered pools above the water, and wide terraces make the river a constant presence. The RAIVA restaurant is in the 2026 MICHELIN Guide, and the property was formerly known as Douro41 Hotel & Spa before Octant Hotels rebranded it.

Guided night-sky session led by two PhD astrophysicists, using two professional telescopes — one for direct observation, one camera-equipped for fainter objects. Planets, stars, galaxies and nebulae. 90 minutes. Maximum 15 participants. Available in English and Portuguese.
Guided canyoning in the Ardena River at Espiunca. Features jumps into crystal-clear pools, waterfall rappelling and riverbed trekking. Led by expert guides with all equipment, insurance, photos and transfer included. Minimum age 12 years.
Horseback rides through the Douro landscape arranged by hotel staff.
Visit to a 100-year-old Vinho Verde estate in Castelo de Paiva, 40 km from Porto. Includes vineyard tour, tasting of 3 wines and traditional regional tapas. Optional picnic in the garden. Available Thursday to Saturday, minimum 2 people.
