Why It Matters
One of Porto's few genuinely historic palace conversions in active use as a hotel. Built in 1831, the building hosted the city's merchant elite and was home to one of Porto's first elevators. The wedding of old Porto bourgeois grandeur with thoughtful contemporary design is executed without heavy-handedness.
A restored 1831 merchant mansion on Rua de Cedofeita, now a 5-star boutique hotel with 72 rooms spread across several interconnected buildings. Original carved wood ceilings, Portuguese azulejo tiles, and stained-glass windows sit alongside contemporary botanical murals and bespoke furniture — the contrast works. The Le Palais restaurant preserves the ballroom's gilded columns and gold moldings, making it one of the more dramatic dining rooms in Porto.
