Why It Matters

Protected as a Category One historic site by the New Zealand Historic Places Trust, awarded 2 Michelin Keys, and a Relais & Châteaux member. The gardens alone are listed as a Garden of National Significance by the New Zealand Garden Trust. Dinner is the most coveted reservation in Canterbury and is now open to outside visitors for the first time — but only a table or two per night.

New Zealand's largest private historic residence, Otahuna Lodge is a turreted Queen Anne mansion built in 1895 as New Zealand's most extravagant wedding gift. Set on 30 acres of heritage gardens against the backdrop of an ancient volcano's cone, roughly 30 minutes south of Christchurch, it holds just seven individually designed suites. The whole experience is all-inclusive: pre-dinner cocktails, a nightly four-course chef's menu with matched wines, cooked breakfast, and laundry are all folded into the rate.

Botanical Suite

From NZD1,495 / night

Situated in the original Morning Room on the ground floor, this suite has a gingerbread mantlepiece carved from New Zealand timber and a sunlit bay window that looks straight onto the formal gardens. Easy to imagine fine ladies of Canterbury taking morning tea here a century ago. The woodwork throughout is exceptionally detailed.

Clark Suite

From NZD1,495 / night

Named for Jessie Clark, Lady of the House, this was Jessie's former personal bedroom. Its defining feature is the original stained-glass windows, through which the woodland beyond filters light into the room. Each pane tells part of the house's story. A deeply personal room with a strong sense of provenance.

Jockey Jones Suite

From NZD1,495 / night

A jaunty, sophisticated two-bathroom suite honouring one of Otahuna's most beloved historical personalities. It comprises a bedroom and a separate living room — more space than the name might suggest. The layered equestrian references give it a playful, distinct character among the lodge's suites.

Polo Suite

From NZD1,495 / night

The newest addition to the five classic suites, the Polo Suite occupies a sunny position at the front of the house. Named for the polo tradition at Otahuna, it has a dual outlook — the Great Lawn on one side, the Port Hills on the other. Sun-filled and fresh, it's the brightest room in the lodge.

Rhodes Suite
Master Suite

Rhodes Suite

From NZD1,955 / night

Originally the master bedroom of Sir Heaton and Lady Jessie Rhodes, this is actually a series of four interconnected rooms — bedroom, separate lounge, study, and a private balcony. The largest suite in the lodge, it's adorned with ornate timber fireplaces and reflects the gracious character of its original owners. Leathers, houndstooth fabrics, and oak furniture set the tone; the freestanding bathtub in the bathroom is a proper centrepiece.

The Loft Suite

The Loft Suite

From NZD1,495 / night

Tucked under the gables of the property, The Loft is the quirkiest room in the lodge. Bright timber-clad walls, fresh green tones, a vintage Schumacher Chinoiserie headboard, and a bespoke art collection give it a whimsical quality that stands apart from the house's otherwise Victorian register. A writer's nook, convertible sofa, and freestanding tub in a spacious bathroom round it out. Views sweep over the Great Lawn to the Southern Alps.

Verandah Suite

From NZD1,955 / night

Historically reserved for the property's most privileged guests, the Verandah Suite lives up to that reputation with its panoramic private terrace and sweeping Great Lawn views. Large windows and cane furniture lean into the 'room with a view' billing. Like the Rhodes Suite, it features a wood-burning fireplace and sweeping outdoor terrace — great for watching the Canterbury plains at dusk.
