Oyado The Earth
Contemporary Japanese ryokan with a serious environmental philosophy. Common spaces are traditional floor-level tatami style; bedrooms are western hotel-style beds for comfort. The whole place leans into raw, unfiltered nature — think watching a typhoon from your outdoor bath, not sipping cocktails by a curated infinity pool.
Book the shuttle from Kintetsu Toba Station in advance — it departs at 3pm, 4pm, 5pm (2pm with prior reservation). Miss it and you're stuck.
Why It Matters
One Michelin Key holder. The only ryokan in Japan built specifically to observe storms from inside. Owns and protects its own bay — Ongi no Hama — where Ama women divers still work. Private onsen baths in every suite, fed by an on-site spring. Located on 180,000 sqm of which only 5% is developed.
Oyado The Earth is a 16-suite ryokan perched on a cliff above the Pacific Ocean inside Ise-Shima National Park, near Toba City in Mie Prefecture. The property bills itself as a place to 'watch the storm' — it sits at the tip of a cape, ringed by primeval forest and open ocean, and the owners have deliberately left 95% of their 180,000 square meter land plot undeveloped. Every one of the 16 suites gets its own private open-air onsen bath fed by the on-site Ryunosu (Dragon's Nest) hot spring, which only became active in 2009. And it holds one Michelin Key.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A 1.5km round-trip trail to the shoreline. At low tide, you can walk across to a tidal sandbar in a scene the hotel compares to Mont-Saint-Michel. The path passes the property's own Ongi no Hama bay, where Ama women divers still work.
1.8km round-trip along the rugged coastline. Ocean wave sounds throughout. Known for dramatic sunrise views when the ocean turns red at dawn.
A 1.2km round-trip walk through virgin primeval forest on the property. Spring brings wild sakura along the trail. The hotel loans trekking shoes and animal repellent bells from the front desk.
1.5km round-trip. Starts with a steep climb, opens out to a wide panoramic view from the high point. The most strenuous of the four trails.
An open-air observation deck for stargazing, sunrise watching, and daytime ocean views. Open at night for moon and star observation over the Pacific.
