Palácio do Governador is a 60-room, five-star boutique hotel in Lisbon's Belém district, built on the site of the 17th-century governor's house of Belém Tower and exquisitely restored over Roman ruins dating from the 1st to 5th centuries. The reception sits inside what was once a chapel. Preserved Roman stone vats — former fish-sauce storage — still sit beneath the entrance courtyard, and traditional blue-and-white azulejo tiles line the walls throughout. Interior designer Nini Andrade Silva layered the spaces with noble woods and elegant paneling, while certain suites retain original brick vaulted ceilings and limestone floors. It's a serious history property, not a theme-park version of one.
