Palacio Tondón
Historic palace meets contemporary design hotel. Serious about wine — this is La Rioja wine country, after all — with a grown-up, quiet atmosphere and a genuine sense of place. Not a party hotel. More for slow travel: long dinners, winery visits, river walks to Haro.
Book the restaurant in advance — it's small and fills up, especially on weekends when lunch service is added
Why It Matters
One of very few hotels in La Rioja that genuinely integrates its 16th-century architecture with modern design rather than just wallpapering over it. The on-site 17th-century calado wine cave with a waterfall is genuinely rare. Listed on both the Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels, and part of Marriott's Autograph Collection — all three quality filters point the same direction.
A 16th-century palace spread across three interconnected stone buildings in the tiny village of Briñas, right on the banks of the Ebro River. The architecture is the whole point: original weathered stone and knotty pine walls meet bold modern additions of glass and metal, and the contrast works. Rooms are minimalist-chic, the restaurant sits literally riverside on the lower floor, and the historic cave wine cellar — a 17th-century calado — goes straight under the building to a waterfall fed directly by the Ebro.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel's standout feature and genuinely one-of-a-kind. A 17th-century underground cave on the hotel's lower floor, with a natural waterfall fed directly by the Ebro River flowing through the space. Private and group wine tastings are organized here, guided by a sommelier through an organoleptic tasting of wines from various Rioja varieties and vintages, paired with artisanal tapas. Available for individual stays, group events, and corporate functions.
The concierge assists with organizing visits to local wineries in the Barrio de la Estación in Haro — the world's largest concentration of centenary bodegas, including names like La Rioja Alta, CVNE, Muga, and López de Heredia. Most require advance reservations for guided tours with tastings. The hotel works with local operators including Thabuca Wine Tours, Rioja like a Native, and Riojatrek.
On-site fitness center available to hotel guests.
A sommelier-guided organoleptic wine tasting set in the elegant calado. Covers wines from multiple Rioja varieties and vintages, paired with artisanal tapas. Ideal for guests who want structured wine education alongside pleasure.
The hotel can arrange a hot air balloon flight over La Rioja and Rioja Alavesa through partner Globos Arcoiris. A classic way to see the vine-covered landscape from above.
A walking path runs from the hotel along the Ebro River, passing the Gothic Briñas Bridge (dating to the late 13th century) and continuing into Haro — about 5.5 km. The walk takes in the horseshoe meander of the Ebro and offers views of vineyards and mountains. Cycling is also available.
