Palazzo Durazzo is a 17th-century noble palace on Genoa's waterfront that spent 400 years as the official state guesthouse of the Genoese Republic — receiving kings and ambassadors — before reopening in 2023 as a 12-suite hotel. After a seven-year restoration led by architect and family descendant Emanuela Brignone Cattaneo, it's now the most storied address in a city that doesn't get nearly enough attention. Every room is a one-of-a-kind: think 7-metre frescoed ceilings by Baroque master Domenico Parodi, shell mosaic grottos, and a private chapel. There is no pool, no spa in the traditional sense, and no gym — but the rooms themselves are the spectacle.

You're sleeping at the bottom of the sea, recreated with collections of rare shells and gorgonians. Mezzanine loft with two sofas convertible to single beds makes it the most versatile family option.
