Why It Matters

This is Beatrice Portinari's house. Dante's muse. That Beatrice. The 15th-century palazzo bearing her family name opened in April 2022 after a meticulous restoration by Milanese studio Spagnulo & Partners, and the result is one of the most historically loaded places to sleep in all of Italy. It was also the first residence of Cosimo I de' Medici. The building has been returned to something close to its Renaissance-era self, complete with original Tuscan terracotta floors, wooden coffered ceilings decorated in the mid-1400s, and frescoes painted by Tommaso Gherardini in the early 1700s. Fourteen suites and a growing collection of apartments fill the building, with a Michelin-starred restaurant and a 500-sqm underground spa rounding out the package.
