Palazzo Previtera
Aristocratic Sicilian palazzo meets living art gallery. Ornate painted ceilings, original floor tiles, restored silk fabrics, antique dark-wood furniture, and mid-century touches coexist with contemporary art installations. More cultured family home than polished hotel — floors creak, coffee arrives on silver trays, and the owner is likely to give you a personal tour of the family chapels.
Ask Alfio Puglisi for a personal tour of the family chapels, frescoed salons, and 300-year-old library — it is the best thing about staying here
Why It Matters
The only Etna Living Museum in existence, with an active contemporary art gallery (SARP) in the cellar, museum rooms open for guests to explore, and artist residencies running year-round. Named 'Best Hotel in Sicily' 2026 by Condé Nast Traveller. In July 2025 it added a 15-seat tasting menu restaurant (Previtera Kitchen) under a chef from a 2-Michelin-star kitchen, plus two new suites and a bar. All produce draws from the family's own farm and vineyard.
A 17th-century baroque palazzo on the northern slopes of Etna, Palazzo Previtera has been in the same family since 1649. Restored over a decade by Alfio Puglisi, a direct descendant of the Previtera family, it opened as a luxury guesthouse in 2023. It operates simultaneously as a guesthouse, a contemporary art gallery (SARP), and Sicily's only Etna Living Museum — with museum rooms preserving 500+ years of Sicilian history, frescoed salons, intimate chapels, and resident artists from around the world. Named 'Best Hotel in Sicily' 2026 by Condé Nast Traveller and listed in the Michelin Guide.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Bespoke guided walk through the family's 15-hectare Bonneherbe estate, a stretch of unspoiled woodland with hazelnut trees and ancient oaks, with commanding views of Linguaglossa and the Ionian Sea from the peak. Organised on request.
The Sicily Artist Residency Programme (SARP) gallery is located in the cellar beneath the palazzo. A leading centre for contemporary art in Sicily, it hosts rotating exhibitions by international artists, many of whom are in residence in Linguaglossa. Guests can meet resident artists over breakfast or visit their studio in a nearby converted hazelnut barn.
Classes held in the palazzo's retro kitchen, designed by Raymond Loewy in 1935. Focus on traditional Sicilian techniques — cleaning fish, roasting vegetables, making Mediterranean casseroles.
Organised excursion to a winery on Mount Etna's slopes, paired with a guided tasting of the region's volcanic wines. Alfio can also arrange private visits to specific estates.
Hands-on lesson in traditional Sicilian cheese-making techniques using local Etna dairy.
Guided foraging excursions to a nearby hazelnut farm in search of the prized Etna Hazelnut, wild fennel, asparagus, and herbs. The chef forages twice weekly and the produce goes straight into the restaurant's tasting menu.
Guided hike up Mount Etna, approximately 5-6 hours. Led by trained geologists and local guides. Around €100 per person including guide. The volcano peaks at 3,357 metres and the northern approach from Linguaglossa is considered the most scenic.
A personal guided tour with owner Alfio Puglisi through the palazzo's frescoed salons, intimate family chapels, shaded libraries filled with 300 years of books, and museum rooms preserving over 500 years of Sicilian history. Original documents, family bookkeeping ledgers from the 19th century, and restored silk fabrics throughout.
Lessons in traditional Sicilian embroidery (as seen throughout the palazzo's interiors) given by a local artisan in Castiglione di Sicilia, a town on the northwest slope of Etna famous for this craft.
