Why It Matters

Palisociety took over the 1912 Hotel St. James building in San Diego's Gaslamp Quarter and reopened it in 2023 as a 122-room boutique hotel with a preppy, nautical-inspired design. The original St. James sign still stands atop the Victorian-era tower. Think bespoke furniture, Diptyque toiletries, Bellino linens, and a French diner off the lobby — all in a building whose elevators date to 1913 and require opening a manual gate to board.
