Parador de Alarcón
Medieval fortress with upscale Spanish heritage hotel character. Austere stonework, Castilian oak furniture, four-poster beds in tower rooms, and a serious contemporary art collection. No pools, no spa — this one is all about the history and the views.
Ask the front desk for the key to the ramparts — the views over the Júcar River gorge are exceptional
Why It Matters
One of the most atmospheric castle hotels in Spain. The building occupies the best-preserved castle in the province of Cuenca, with over 1,300 years of history. With only 14 rooms, it operates more like a boutique property. Guests can ask reception for the key to walk the ramparts. The Júcar River wraps around three sides of the rocky hill below.
A genuine 8th-century Moorish fortress perched on a rocky promontory above the Júcar River, with just 14 rooms. This is one of the smallest Paradores in Spain, which is exactly the point — the whole place feels like your own private castle. Stone walls, vaulted ceilings, rich red and orange textiles, original wood beams, and a curated collection of contemporary Spanish paintings create a setting that is equal parts medieval fortress and upscale hotel.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The Júcar River wrapping around the castle is a noted fishing spot. The reception can assist with local guidance and arrangements.
The village of Alarcón offers guided tours twice daily covering the main monuments: the castle, Jesús Mateo's UNESCO-recognised murals in the deconsecrated church of San Juan Bautista, the Castañeda Palace, and the nearly intact medieval town walls. Check with reception for current tour schedules.
The hotel's tour desk arranges activities in the surrounding area including horse riding, mountain biking, guided excursions to nearby Cuenca (89km), Belmonte castle (75km), and local winery visits (Illana and Vitis Natura wineries are under an hour away).
A roughly 9km loop trail that starts at the village gate and follows the Júcar River through the gorge (hoz). Passes the town walls, the Puerta de Chinchilla, and a series of scenic viewpoints over the river and castle. Two options: a longer route following the full Júcar river path, or a shorter circuit around the village itself.
Ask the reception desk for the key to access the castle battlements and walk the ramparts. The views over the Júcar River gorge and the Castilian plateau are exceptional. Several guests call it the highlight of a stay. Free for hotel guests.
The Alarcón Reservoir, about 6km from the village, has multiple inland beaches (Playa del Árbol, Playa Olivares) and is the base for sailing, windsurfing, canoeing, and rowing. The hotel's tour desk can assist with arrangements.
