Parador de El Saler Golf
Mid-century modernist meets Mediterranean nature reserve. Clean, unpretentious, and genuinely surrounded by nature. More sporty resort than boutique retreat.

Why It Matters
Home to one of continental Europe's most highly regarded golf courses — an 18-hole par-72 designed by Javier Arana in 1968, ranked in Golf Magazine's Top 100 in the World. Bernhard Langer set the course record here at 62. The hotel sits inside the Albufera Natural Park, a UNESCO-recognised wetland with over 300 bird species, and uses solar panels to supply all its hot water.
A low-rise modernist hotel built in 1968 on a narrow strip of land between the Mediterranean Sea and the Albufera lagoon, inside Spain's largest wetland nature reserve. The architecture is all clean lines and big glass — it wouldn't look out of place in a Bond film — and most rooms open onto private terraces facing either the sea or one of Europe's most lauded golf courses. Golf Magazine has ranked the El Saler course as high as 60th in the world, and it has hosted the Spanish Open multiple times. But even if you don't play, the spa, outdoor pool, and near-deserted beachfront make a strong case for staying put.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The par-72, 6,042-metre course designed by Javier Arana in 1968 is the main reason many people visit. Ranked in Golf Magazine's World Top 100 (most recently around 60th globally), it runs through Mediterranean pine forest, beach links reminiscent of Scottish courses, and near the dunes. Wide fairways, huge greens, and nearly a hundred bunkers. Bernhard Langer set the course record at 62 in 1984. Club, trolley, and electric cart hire available on-site. Golf phone reservations: +34 963 060 720.
On-site golf school with instruction for all levels, including a children's programme. Practice facilities include a driving range, 3 putting greens, and 2 approach greens.
A footbridge next to two holes on the golf course leads directly to the beach, which stretches to the port of Valencia on the horizon. Fine sand, clean water, and remarkably uncrowded given the proximity to a major city. Also suitable for windsurfing.
The surrounding Albufera Natural Park hosts over 300 species of birds. The visitor centre at the Racó de l'Olla Reserve has several birdwatching hides within easy reach of the hotel.
The pine forest and dune paths of the Dehesa del Saler make for excellent cycling and running. Bicycle hire is available at the hotel.
A regulation grass football pitch on the grounds.
Traditional Valencian lateen sailboat tours on the lagoon, accessible from nearby docks such as Gola de Pujol (10 minutes by car). Not operated by the hotel directly but recommended for guests.
An accessible walking trail through the local ecosystem of the Albufera Natural Park, departing near the hotel.
Seasonal outdoor pool with hot tub. Operates during summer months.
