Pedras Salgadas Spa & Nature Park
Eco-architecture forest retreat meeting 19th-century thermal heritage. The geometric Eco Houses and pods floating among the trees feel like the future; the restored spa — with its stained-glass ceiling, period carved woodwork, and mineral spring water fountain — pulls you a century back. Guests are a mix of Porto weekenders, architecture lovers, and families looking for nature without roughing it.

Why It Matters
Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira restored the historic thermal spa building. The stilted Eco Houses and Tree Houses won Building of the Year 2012. The mineral springs on site have been sought after since 1876 — this is literally the source of the famous Pedras Salgadas sparkling water brand, still bottled here today. The combination of world-class architecture, genuine thermal wellness, and 20 hectares of century-old parkland is hard to find anywhere in Europe at this price.
An old thermal park in Portugal's rural north gets a dramatic architectural intervention — and the result is genuinely worth the drive inland. The Eco Houses and Tree Houses, designed by Luis Rebelo de Andrade (Building of the Year 2012), hover above the forest floor on lightweight stilted frames. Meanwhile, the 19th-century spa building — restored by Pritzker Prize-winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira — has been brought back to life with heated thermal pools and 14 treatment rooms. Just 1h10 from Porto, across 20 hectares with 8km of trails, it feels like a completely different world.
