Penmaenuchaf
Genteel but unstuffy Welsh country house. Think oak-panelled lounges, log fires, lavender beds in the garden, and zero pretension. The staff are locally based, the food is hyper-seasonal, and guests come as much for the mountains as the comfort.

Why It Matters
Sits inside Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park with direct walking access to the Mawddach Trail and Cadair Idris. Restaurant Afon is Michelin-listed. The gardens are registered with Cadw as a historically important 19th century terraced garden. Head Chef Dan Andrée previously held a Michelin star at Beach House Restaurant in Oxwich, Pembrokeshire. The Times called it 'easy-going glamour, tasting menus with local produce, and stupendous scenery in a national park setting.'
Penmaenuchaf is a stone-fronted Victorian mansion house perched above the Mawddach Estuary, at the foot of Cadair Idris, within 21 acres of Cadw-registered terraced gardens and woodland. Built around 1860, the house has 14 individually designed rooms named after Welsh legends and landscapes. Owners Zoe and Neil Kedward took it over in June 2022 as part of their Seren family business, and have been quietly restoring it ever since — keeping the panelled drawing rooms and antique fireplaces, while freshening up the bedrooms and the restaurant.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles available for rent from the hotel to explore the Mawddach Trail and surrounding Eryri National Park routes.
Penmaenuchaf holds four permits giving guests complimentary access to fish the Dolgellau Angling Association waters on the Mawddach and Wnion rivers and Llyn Cynwch. Expect salmon and trout. Guests must bring their own fishing licence and equipment. Info packs with maps and fly recommendations are available at reception.
The kitchen team forages locally for mushrooms, wild garlic, and utilises honey from the hotel's own hives. Guests benefit from this through the menus at Afon Restaurant. The developing raised-bed kitchen garden already provides herbs and some vegetables.
The 21-acre Cadw-registered terraced gardens include a sunken ornamental garden, lavender beds, a pond, woodland paths, and a long viewing lawn overlooking the Mawddach Estuary. Seasonal highlights include spring daffodils and bluebells, summer swallows, and autumn copper woodland.
Couples can arrange private dining or in-room champagne for special occasions. Contact the hotel directly to arrange.
Walking trails accessible directly from the hotel. The Mawddach Trail follows the old railway line to the sea. The Panorama and Precipice walks take you high above the estuary. Cadair Idris is five minutes by car. Maps and advice available from the hotel team.
