Why It Matters
One of the first hotels in Europe with a dedicated on-site Art District. The building itself is a real 16th-century fortification that once defended the mouth of the Tagus River and served as a royal holiday residence. Condé Nast Traveller elected it a 'Hot Property'; the NY Times and Wall Street Journal have both recommended it. The 608 ceramic swallows by artist Rafael Bordallo Pinheiro that greet you in the lobby are a statement of intent.
A 16th-century seafront fortress that now operates as a 133-room luxury hotel — and somehow it works. The old stone walls, cobblestone courtyards, and rampart walks are all very much intact; the interiors, however, are all hardwood floors, contemporary art, and clean modern lines. Part of Pestana Collection Hotels, it claims the title of one of the first hotels in Europe with a fully operational on-site Art District: six working artist ateliers, a project room, rotating galleries, and an Art Concierge to guide you through it all.

An Art Concierge guides guests through the hotel's on-site Art District, including six working artist ateliers, a project room, galleries, rotating exhibitions, and art installations throughout the public spaces. Artists occasionally open their studios to visitors.
