Fisherman Village
Maritime literary boutique. Light tones, dark blue accents, exposed stone vaults, cloister fountain, resident library. Calm inside despite the buzzy village right outside the front door.
Request an inner courtyard-facing room for more quiet — street-facing rooms can pick up bar noise past midnight
Why It Matters
The only hotel in Madeira themed entirely around Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea.' Set in a genuinely historic building that also houses an on-site Interpretative Centre for Fishing and Fishermen. Selected by both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. The rooftop pool overlooking Câmara de Lobos bay is the best view per euro in the area.
A 47-room boutique hotel built inside two restored heritage buildings — including a 19th-century government seat called Torre Bela — right in the heart of Câmara de Lobos, a fishing village 8km west of Funchal. The whole place is a tribute to Ernest Hemingway's 'The Old Man and the Sea,' and the execution is surprisingly coherent: vaulted ceilings, original stone walls, a palette of crisp whites and deep Atlantic blue, and a Hemingway letter reproduced on every headboard. From the rooftop pool, you look straight out over the bay.
