Why It Matters
One of the largest Pousadas de Portugal and the only Porto hotel occupying an 18th-century Nasoni-designed baroque palace alongside a Victorian-era flour factory. The combination of two wildly different historic structures — palace and mill — on a Douro riverfront setting is genuinely hard to replicate.
The Palácio do Freixo is two buildings pulled into one. Out front: a grand 18th-century baroque palace designed by Nicolau Nasoni, classified as a National Monument since 1910, its gilded halls and 1850s frescoed ceilings doing all the jaw-dropping work. Around the back and connected by a covered walkway: a converted 19th-century flour mill where all 87 guest rooms actually live. Contemporary, calm, dark-wood interiors — intentionally understated against the palace theatrics. It sits right on the Douro River, about 3km from Porto's historic center, meaning the free shuttle is your friend.
