Why It Matters
The entire property — building and French-style gardens — is classified as a Portuguese National Monument. The Pestana Palace occupies a legitimately classified 19th-century palace — the Palácio de Valle Flôr — in the quiet Alto de Santo Amaro district, about 8 km west of the historic center. That distance is the trade-off here: you get National Monument-classified gardens, a stained-glass entrance hall, a domed ceiling, a monumental staircase, and 190 rooms spread across the original manor and two modern wings, but you'll need the hotel's free shuttle or a 15-minute Uber to reach Alfama or Baixa.
