Pheasant Inn Pub & Rooms
Racing country pub meets boutique bolthole. Warm, convivial, locally loved — trainers and jockeys share the bar with London weekenders. Racing green and red interiors, vintage leather bar stools, a snug stacked with books. Smart but never precious.

Why It Matters
One of Berkshire's most acclaimed gastropubs-with-rooms. AA 1 Rosette, Top 50 Gastropubs recognition, listed on Tablet Hotels and Mr & Mrs Smith. Remarkable value for the quality — rooms from around £99/night. Just one minute from M4 Junction 14 yet completely surrounded by North Wessex Downs AONB countryside.
A 450-year-old former drovers' inn sitting on the edge of Berkshire's Valley of the Racehorse — think flagstone floors, an open fire in the bar, taxidermied fox in the corner, and racing prints on every wall. Young's Pubs took over in January 2022 and added some polish without erasing the soul. Fourteen rooms come fitted with Hypnos mattresses, Egyptian cotton linens and Bramley toiletries, and the kitchen holds an AA Rosette for good reason: produce comes straight from North Wessex Downs farmers, cheesemongers and Cornwall's Flying Fish Seafood.

How you'll actually spend your days.
4,000-year-old Neolithic monuments you can walk amongst freely — unlike Stonehenge. A short drive from the inn.
The filming location for Downton Abbey, set in 1,000 acres of parkland. Open to the public 60-70 days per year. Arrangements made independently.
A selection of board games and puzzles available in the pub. Perfect for a rainy afternoon in the snug.
Day trips along the Kennet and Avon Canal via Sally Narrowboats, accessible from Hungerford (10 minutes away).
Newbury Racecourse is a 20-minute drive away. The pub is a favourite pre- and post-race venue for the racing fraternity, and screens live races in the bar.
The inn sits within the North Wessex Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Rolling chalk hills and thick woodland walks start practically from the car park. The Valley of the Racehorse offers gentle scenic trails, and the wider area connects to Savernake Forest.
