Why It Matters
The only Italian property of the Fontenille Collection (a French wine-country hotel group), this is a Relais & Châteaux member since its 2023 opening. The estate is a listed Italian historic monument, designed by Florence's Pierattelli Architetture under the supervision of the Soprintendenza. Terracotta floors are hand-molded at the Cotto Manetti factory in Impruneta — the same clay, the same kiln process, since 1780.
A 10th-century episcopal complex on the Chiantigiana wine road, turned into Fontenille Collection's first Italian address in 2023. The estate — former summer residence of the Bishops of Siena — sits on 40 hectares of olive groves and vineyards, right next to the Romanesque church of Santa Maria Novella, one of the oldest in the Florentine heritage. It feels less like a hotel and more like a private hamlet. Twenty-two rooms spread across four historic buildings, no TVs, and a Chianti view from every single window.

A step up in space and finish. Sage green, beige, and brown palette inspired by the surrounding landscape. Contemporary Italian furniture from Gervasoni 1882 sits alongside stone walls and herringbone-patterned cotto tiles.
Family Suite
Designed for families, with a sofa-bed and space for a cot. Rooms 10 and 11 can be closed off to create a connecting family unit with a private entrance at the foot of the stairs — ideal for travelling with young children.
Historic Suite
Housed in La Pieve, the listed main building once used by the Bishops of Siena. Ancient walls, weathered parquet floors, and the best Chianti hill views in the house. A grand coffered wooden ceiling in the salon and neoclassical frescoes on the walls make this the most historically immersive room on the property.
Junior Suite
More living space with a separate seating area. Spread across historic buildings including the Conventino, each Junior Suite has its own character thanks to the irregular historic floor plan. Imposing wooden frameworks and a warm beige-and-brown palette.
La Piccola
The entry-level room at Pieve Aldina. Even the smallest option here comes with terracotta floors, exposed beams, and a Chianti hill or garden view. Compact but beautifully finished, with the same artisan materials as the suites.

The most expansive option alongside the Loft. Separate living salon with Gervasoni Ghost sofas and Loll armchairs. Views across vineyards and olive groves from multiple angles. Artwork by Parisian artists Dune Varela and Stéphanie Montaigu on the walls.
