Portom International Hokkaido
Japanese art museum meets luxury airport refuge. The interiors draw on dyed-silk installations, gold-lacquer techniques, Edo-period paintings, and plaster finishes — curated rather than decorative. It's quiet and serious inside, even with a departures board a few floors below.

Why It Matters
The only hotel directly connected to New Chitose Airport's international terminal, and one of very few airport hotels in the world that can genuinely claim a museum-grade art collection. Each of the 171 rooms displays a unique original Katsushika Hokusai woodblock print. The flagship Sukiya Suite at 250 sqm includes a private tea ceremony and onsen — at an airport.
Portom International Hokkaido opened in February 2020 on floors 4 through 8 of New Chitose Airport's international terminal — and it's nothing like a standard layover hotel. Every one of the 171 rooms holds an original Hokusai Manga woodblock print. The Sukiya Suite is 250 square meters with a tatami room and private onsen. There's a Michelin-starred French restaurant, a 160-year-old Kyoto kaiseki institution as a dining partner, and a natural hot-spring onsen and sauna in the building. The tradeoff: no pool, no parking, and runway-facing rooms get real aircraft noise starting around 6:50 a.m.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Monumental dyed-silk installations hang in the light-wells of the guest room elevator atrium on floors 5 through 8. The color gradations represent 'Winter and Spring' and 'Summer and Autumn' and the works rotate twice a year. Worth a slow look rather than a quick glance on the way to your room.
A 24-hour private lounge exclusively for hotel guests showcasing primarily Edo-period artworks — Utagawa Hiroshige, Ito Jakuchu, Hakuin Ekaku, and Imari ware ceramics. Good for late-night quiet time when the rest of the airport is winding down.
A fully equipped fitness center on the 4th floor with treadmills and weight equipment. Available to hotel guests 6:00–10:00 and 14:00–24:00.
A traditional Japanese tea ceremony held in the dedicated tea house on the 4th floor. Reservations required. Chairs are available for guests who prefer not to kneel on the tatami. Open 13:00–18:00 (last booking 17:00); closed Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
A curated retail space on the 4th floor carrying Made-in-Hokkaido products alongside Japanese art objects and crafts by artists from across Japan. Open 10:00–18:00, with some closures — check the monthly notice on the official site.
