A 1697 regent's house turned national monument, Suitehotel De Posthoorn sits right in the centre of historic Monnickendam, 12km north of Amsterdam. Twelve individually designed suites and rooms spread across two adjoining 17th-century buildings — think barrel-vault ceilings, original moldings, and claw-foot baths. Napoleon reportedly slept here; the Dutch Royal Family were regulars. The on-site Restaurant Joon now runs a modern French-international kitchen with seasonal tasting menus up to seven courses.
