Achenkirch
Alpine wellness resort meets longevity retreat. Country-house warmth, Tyrolean materials (oak, stone, linen), with an increasingly modern wellness and biohacking layer. Not slick or corporate — genuinely family-run.
The Sunken Temple is only open daily from 1pm–8pm — plan your spa day around it.
Why It Matters
One of the largest private Lipizzaner studs in Europe on site. The Sunken Temple sauna complex is architecturally and experientially unusual — entered through rock, featuring a salt-steam Soledom, Dragon Sauna, Indian sandstone Temple Sauna, and a Kneipp water path. The hotel has been operating since 1500 (first postal station) and has been a wellness pioneer in Tyrol since the 1980s.
A family-owned 5-star adults-only resort set on a working Lipizzaner horse and livestock farm just north of Lake Achensee in the Austrian Alps. Four generations of the Reiter family have run this place since 1918, and that history shows — the hotel has real warmth to it rather than the polished anonymity of a chain. The spa alone runs to 7,000m², with the headline attraction being the Sunken Temple: a subterranean Far Eastern-inspired sauna complex reached through a narrow rock passage. Gault & Millau-awarded cuisine, a 9-hole golf course, and around 60 hours of weekly programming round out a property that genuinely delivers on the wellness-resort promise.
