Request a room facing Praça do Comércio — the square views are worth the upgrade

Why It Matters

One of Lisbon's most prime pieces of real estate turned hotel: a former royal residence and Ministry of Internal Affairs, beautifully restored, holding a Michelin Key (2025) and membership in Small Luxury Hotels of the World since 2015. The address is essentially unbeatable — right on Praça do Comércio with direct sightlines to the Tagus.

This building spent centuries as a royal residence and then a government ministry before someone had the good sense to turn it into a hotel. It sits right on the corner of Praça do Comércio — the most storied square in Lisbon — with the River Tagus glittering just beyond the arches. Inside, you get imposing stone staircases with red carpet, original gilded ceilings, and works of art on loan from the Lisbon Museum. Ninety rooms across four floors balance historic grandeur with contemporary comfort, and Molton Brown amenities sit in every bathroom. But this is not a museum piece: the Magic Spa hums along, the RIB Beef & Wine restaurant pulls in locals as well as guests, and the breakfast courtyard under a retractable dome is one of the better ways to start a morning in this city.
