Why It Matters

Portugal's only palace hotel in the Algarve sits 13km inland from Faro in the quiet village of Estoi. The dusky pink Rococo facade — built by the Viscount of Estoi and completed in the early 20th century — drips with gold leaf, ornate plasterwork, and formal French-style gardens. Inside, the mix of Neoclassical, Neo-Rococó, and Art Nouveau details is still intact; the reception is in the old chapel, and the museum in the former exhibition space traces Roman, Islamic, and classical influences on the region. The 63 guest rooms are in a modern wing with a deliberately stripped-back contemporary style that actually works against all the historic drama outside.
