Quinta da Casa Branca
Contemporary design hotel wrapped in a private botanical garden. Calm, adults-leaning, and serious about food. Think Frank Lloyd Wright meets old Madeiran estate — not a party hotel.
Ask for a first-floor Premium Room — the balconies are large enough for a proper chaise longue session
Why It Matters
One of Madeira's only true design hotels, with award-winning architecture by Madeiran architect João Favila Menezes. The property descends from British wine merchant John Leacock's 19th-century estate, and the gardens still feature banana trees and subtropical specimens planted centuries ago. The Dining Room in the Manor House is considered one of Funchal's best fine-dining tables.
A 5-star boutique hotel occupying 6 hectares of subtropical botanical gardens in Funchal's Lido district. The building itself is the story: architect João Favila Menezes, inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright, created a bold fusion of glass, slate, and dark wood that earned the City of Funchal Architecture Prize in 1999. It opened in 1998 as Madeira's first design hotel and joined Small Luxury Hotels of the World in 2003. The property splits between 49 rooms in the contemporary Quinta building and five ultra-spacious suites in the original 19th-century Manor House, connected through the estate's gardens.
