Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
Historic Portuguese manor house meets intimate wine country retreat. Traditional furnishings, wooden floors, carved beds, stone walls — feels more like staying with a very well-appointed local family than checking into a hotel. Serious wine focus throughout.

Why It Matters
Portugal's first wine hotel, set on one of the oldest continuously-producing estates in the Douro Demarcated Region (listed since 1756). Part of the Relais & Châteaux network. The estate has its own train station (Ferrão), a heliport, and a private boat dock — which says a lot about how serious they are about getting guests here.
A working 120-hectare wine estate in the Douro Valley with just 11 rooms, all looking out over ancient vine terraces and the river below. The 18th-century manor house was the first wine estate in the Douro to open wine tourism facilities — and it still sets the standard. You come for the wine, you stay for everything else: the Terraçu's restaurant, the winery tours, the hiking trails, the small chapel built in 1795.
