Maldives Meradhoo
Barefoot colonial luxury — understated elegance with genuine seclusion. Not showy. The kind of place where you can walk to breakfast without shoes and nobody blinks.
Ask for a sunrise-side beach villa for the best beach access and privacy — the vegetation completely screens you from other villas.
Why It Matters
One of the most remote resort experiences in the Maldives, with a dual-island concept unique in the archipelago. The overwater island is entirely unreachable on foot — you boat in, and it's yours. Add a resident marine biologist, dedicated Marine Butlers, and one of the larger villa inventories in the southern atolls, and you have a genuinely distinctive setup.
Raffles Maldives Meradhoo sits at the far southern end of the Maldives in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll — about 400km south of Malé and a full domestic flight away from the crowds. The resort spans two separate private islands: a palm-covered beach island with 22 villas and all the main facilities, and a standalone overwater enclave 800 metres out over the reef, accessible only by boat, with its own restaurant and bar. Only 38 villas total means the place never feels busy. Rooms are enormous by any standard — the smallest starts at 220 sqm — and every single one has a private pool. The design leans into colonial Raffles heritage with grey-blue louvered shutters, seven-metre exposed-beam ceilings, four-poster beds draped in white canopies, and marble bathrooms with sunken tubs. But it wears this lightly; the overall feel is more Maldivian barefoot luxury than Singapore grandeur.

How you'll actually spend your days.
Participate in the marine biologist's active coral growth and seawater monitoring projects. Guests can contribute to reef restoration and learn the science behind coral ecology. An unusual and genuinely substantive experience.
Deep-sea fishing excursions in the waters of Gaafu Alifu Atoll. Consistently recommended by guests as a standout experience.
Boat trips to uninhabited or local islands in the Gaafu Alifu Atoll for cultural and exploration experiences.
Children's activities including coconut painting, sand art, cooking classes, marine biology sessions, and treasure hunts.
The resort's resident marine biologist leads guided snorkeling tours of the two house reefs — one on the main island, one adjacent to the overwater villas. Encounters with hawksbill and green turtles (including 'Apollo,' a regular), nurse sharks, eagle rays, mobula rays, and seasonally whale sharks. All Marine Butlers are trained by the biologist and accompany guests on request.
Fully equipped gym with panoramic ocean views, accessible by boat. Caters to all fitness levels.
On-site padel tennis court — an unusual addition for a remote Maldives island.
On-site PADI-certified dive center offering courses for beginners through advanced divers. Gaafu Alifu Atoll is one of the world's largest and deepest atolls with largely unexplored, pristine reefs. The dive team has logged sightings of yellow nurse sharks, eagle rays, and whale sharks.
A bespoke private breakfast served on a nearby sandbank at sunrise. One of the resort's signature experiences — a butler and chef escort you by boat to a deserted strip of sand in the middle of the Indian Ocean.
Full range including jet skiing, windsurfing, kayaking, paddleboarding, and private catamaran cruises around the lagoon. Sunset jet ski sessions and private catamaran charters are particularly popular.
Traditional dhoni boat excursion to meet whale sharks — the world's largest known fish species. The resident marine biologist accompanies guests to identify passing sea life including turtles, dolphins, manta rays, and sharks.
One of the most extensive wine lists in the southern Maldives, curated and presented by a resident head sommelier. Private tasting and pairing sessions available. A list of vintages reportedly comparable to those in the British Royal cellars.
Morning yoga sessions held on an ocean-facing deck at the overwater fitness centre. Visiting practitioners also lead tai chi and mindfulness sessions.
