Refuge du Montenvers
Historic alpine refuge with deliberate analogue soul. Digital detox by design: board games and bookshelves replace screens. Cosy but not precious, with genuine mountaineering heritage and a warm, unpretentious atmosphere.
Book dinner half-board — the Refuge restaurant is the only dinner option on-site after the day visitors leave, and ordering à la carte adds up fast.
Why It Matters
One of the oldest Alpine hotels in France, perched directly above the Mer de Glace glacier on the Mont-Blanc massif. Accessible only by the iconic little red rack railway (or on foot), so once the day-trippers leave, overnight guests have the site entirely to themselves. Awarded the Clef Verte (Green Key) eco-label in 2025.
Built in 1880 at the foot of the Mer de Glace glacier and sitting at 1,913 meters, the Refuge du Montenvers is one of the earliest Alpine hotels still operating. It's a rugged granite structure — not a timber chalet — with a sober stone façade and small-paned windows that have stared down generations of climbers. The whole point of staying here is the isolation: once the last cog train descends to Chamonix for the night, you have the glacier, the Drus, and the Grandes Jorasses entirely to yourself. Renovated in 2017, it now offers 18 rooms and suites that keep the old-refuge atmosphere intact — parquet floors, dark reclaimed wood panelling, no TVs — while adding modern plumbing and warm lighting.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The hotel offers bespoke seminar packages at 1,913m altitude. Meeting facilities and event catering available for groups, agencies, and companies.
After the last train descends in the evening, hotel guests have the entire Montenvers site to themselves. The panorama of the Mer de Glace, Les Drus, and the Grandes Jorasses at dusk and dawn is what most guests cite as the highlight of their stay. No ticket required — just staying the night.
An interactive museum dedicated to glaciology and the history of the Mer de Glace, located at the Montenvers site. Gives context to what you're looking at when you gaze down at the glacier. Included in the Mer de Glace travel package.
Multiple hiking trails depart directly from the Montenvers site, including the classic Montenvers–Plan de l'Aiguille traverse. Overnight guests can set out before the day-trippers arrive, which is a significant advantage on the most popular routes.
A gallery sculpted by hand each year directly into the living glacier, accessible via a gondola lift from the Montenvers site. The cave changes shape annually as the glacier moves. First created in 1992 by two high-mountain guides. Included in the Mer de Glace travel package (train + cable car + Glaciorium + cave, approx. €49.70 for adults).
The iconic little red rack-and-pinion train has been running since 1908 and is the primary way to reach the hotel. The 20–30 minute journey from Chamonix is an experience in itself, climbing through pine forest with expanding views of the massif. Train tickets are not included in room rates (approx. €31.50 per adult return in winter 2026).
