Why It Matters
The family behind Retiro da Costiña restaurant has been feeding Galicia since 1939 — Manuel García's parents earned the first Michelin star in 2008, and he added the second in November 2024. The villa complex was built specifically so restaurant guests could stay overnight rather than drive back. The gastronomic breakfast alone is worth a visit: sourdough from the in-house bakery, artisan butter from Santa Comba, Galician cheeses from Silleda, Joselito Iberian charcuterie. There are only 7 villas.
Seven oval, stark-white villas inspired by ancient Celtic castro settlements, scattered across the green hills of inland Galicia. Opened in summer 2023 by the García family (a.k.a. the Costiña dynasty), the resort is designed around silence, nature, and the nearby two-Michelin-star restaurant Retiro da Costiña, located a free-transfer ride away. Architect María Teresa Sánchez Táboas gave each villa a pill-like, no-right-angles form — they sit elevated on the land so air and water circulate beneath them, with living roofs that give back the ground they take. This isn't a resort with pools or tennis courts. The point is to do very little, eat very well, and sleep on a Tempur-Pedic bed.
