Riad Sakkan
Laidback luxury meets fashion-forward design. Traditional Moroccan bones with contemporary art, moody color palettes, and a cool-hotel sensibility. More W Hotel than heritage riad — but with the intimacy of a guesthouse.
Book the rooftop bar/restaurant at least 2 hours in advance — it's open to non-guests but kept intimate
Why It Matters
Belgian-owned boutique riad in Marrakech's trendiest medina quarter. Designed by Willem Smit with an art-centric approach — Marc Lagrange fashion photography throughout, contemporary artworks alongside vintage objets d'art. Listed on both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels. Rooftop bar open to non-guests (with advance reservation), which gives it a destination feel beyond just a place to sleep.
Riad Sakkan sits in Mouassine, the corner of Marrakech's medina that Lonely Planet calls home to 'the hippest bars, restaurants & concept stores.' It's a 250-year-old riad, yes — carved wooden doors, ornamental tilework, two courtyard gardens — but the Belgian owners and designer Willem Smit have layered it with bold contemporary art, black-and-white fashion photography by Marc Lagrange, and a color palette that doesn't look like anywhere else. Twelve rooms, a heated pool, and a rooftop restaurant with Atlas Mountain views. Small enough to feel like a private house.
