Rissai Valley
Remote Tibetan plateau sanctuary. Meditative and deliberately slow-paced. The design is serious about local culture — not a pastiche. Every detail from the Frédéric Malle bathroom amenities to the singing bowl spa treatments is intentional. Expect yaks visible from your private terrace, not a pool bar scene.

Why It Matters
First and only Ritz-Carlton Reserve in mainland China. Three MICHELIN Keys — a first for mainland China. The name 'Rissai' translates from Tibetan as 'village,' a direct nod to the nine ancient Tibetan villages ('Jiuzhaigou') surrounding the property. Architecture by WATG, interiors by the late Jaya Ibrahim. Every guest gets a dedicated 24/7 Nieba — a personal host named for the Tibetan stewards who served nobles.
China's first Ritz-Carlton Reserve — and the sixth in the world — sits on the edges of the Tibetan Plateau, inside a 72,000-hectare UNESCO World Heritage Site. All 87 units are standalone villas, designed by WATG with interiors by the late Jaya Ibrahim, pulling from local Tibetan architecture with bold reds, blues, and oranges alongside heritage antiques and locally sourced materials. The property opened in June 2023 and earned three MICHELIN Keys, the first hotel in mainland China to do so.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
Bicycles available for exploring the resort grounds and surrounding valley roads.
Horseback riding through the valley, one of the more popular ways to see the surrounding landscape at a relaxed pace.
Electric buggy transfers across the resort grounds, available on request through reception. Useful given the hillside terrain of the property.
Guided hikes and cycling excursions through the 180,000-acre Jiuzhaigou nature reserve. The terrain ranges from easy valley walks to more demanding mountain trails.
Guided and non-guided transport to Jiuzhaigou National Park, about 20 minutes from the resort. The park is home to the famous multi-tiered waterfalls, emerald mirror lakes, and giant pandas. The resort can arrange early-morning access before public crowds arrive.
Evening stargazing sessions arranged by the resort. At 2,000 meters elevation with minimal light pollution, the plateau sky is exceptional.
Hands-on workshops in traditional Tibetan crafts including incense-making and Thangka (sacred Buddhist painting) — both considered meditative practices in Tibetan culture.
Guided visits to the nine ancient Tibetan villages surrounding the resort. Guests are welcomed into homes for a direct, non-curated look at traditional village life.
Mahjong, billiards, and table tennis — a relaxed option for rainy days or social evenings inside the resort.
Outdoor fitness classes set against the landscape. Waterfall yoga uses a natural waterfall as the backdrop. Mountain Pilates is held on elevated terrain.
Dedicated children's program with guided outdoor adventures, treasure hunts, animal feeding, kite-flying, stargazing evenings, arts and crafts, and organic farming. The program connects children with Tibetan culture through music, dance, and exploration of indigenous flora and fauna.
Craft-based workshops drawing on local Tibetan traditions. Soap making and moon-shaped fan workshops are among the hands-on activities available for guests of all ages.
