Ritz Paris
Belle Époque grandeur meets 21st-century precision. Think soaring gilded ceilings, Italian marble bathrooms, canopied beds, and crystal chandeliers — but with touchscreen-controlled lighting and flat-screen TVs hidden in gilded mirrors. Deeply formal yet somehow personal. The staff-to-guest ratio is stratospheric, and it shows.
Bar Hemingway seats only a handful of guests — arrive when it opens or prepare to wait. No reservations.
Why It Matters
The most famous hotel in Paris and arguably the world. Founded in 1898 by César Ritz himself, it pioneered the concept of the modern luxury hotel — first in Europe to offer en suite bathrooms, electricity, and telephones in every room. The Suite Impériale is a registered French national monument. The Espadon restaurant earned its Michelin star in 2024 under Chef Eugénie Béziat. Home to the world's only Chanel spa. Bar Hemingway is one of the great cocktail bars on earth. Forbes Travel Guide named it the 2025 Instagram Hotel of the Year.
The Ritz Paris opened on 1 June 1898 when Swiss hotelier César Ritz partnered with chef Auguste Escoffier to create what became the template for modern luxury hotels. It's the place that gave the English language the word 'ritzy.' After a $450 million, four-year restoration completed in 2016, the hotel returned to its pre-war splendor — 142 rooms and suites still bearing the names of Coco Chanel, Ernest Hemingway, and Marcel Proust, all of whom treated it as a second home. Coco Chanel actually lived here for 34 years.
