Book the Comfort room or above to get a balcony — the south-facing mountain view makes a real difference

Why It Matters

Listed on both Michelin Guide and Tablet Hotels for its sharp design and unbeatable gondola-side position in one of the largest ski areas in the Southern Alps. The hotel describes itself as the 'new kid on the block' in Serre Chevalier's design hotel stakes, and the location — 20m from the Aravet bubble lift — is genuinely hard to beat.

Rock Noir is a 4-star boutique hotel sitting practically on top of the Aravet gondola — 20 metres, to be exact — in the Serre Chevalier ski area of the French Alps. The design mixes blonde wood, velvet, furs and lava stone with a fireplace at the center of things, giving it a mountain-chic feel that works as well in summer as in ski season. Thirty-two rooms plus a standalone apartment, an in-house restaurant focused on local producers, a small spa with indoor pool and sauna, and a bar for après-ski. The hotel closes seasonally each spring (typically mid-April through early June) before reopening for summer.
