Why It Matters
This is the oldest continuously operating inn in Osnabrück, dating to 1690. Notable guests include the Dalai Lama, five monarchs, and nine heads of state. Author Erich Maria Remarque name-dropped it in his novel 'Der schwarze Obelisk'. It sits directly opposite the historic Peace of Westphalia Town Hall. The hotel produces its own house gin, 'Use Gin', made from organic wine distillate at a nearby distillery.
Osnabrück's oldest inn, operating continuously since 1690. Eight historic buildings — some nearly 400 years old — now form a single hotel ensemble right on the edge of the medieval old town, a short walk from the market square where the 1648 Peace of Westphalia was signed. Family owners Tanja and Andreas Bernard have run the place since 1995, gradually absorbing neighbouring half-timbered houses and turning them into a 69-room hotel with three restaurants, a rooftop wellness area, and meeting rooms for up to 80 people.
