Rookery Hall
Classic English country house luxury. Formal enough to feel special, relaxed enough that families and dog owners feel at home. Heavy on history in the old wing; sleek and modern in the 2007 east wing. Weddings are a big part of the business — factor that in on weekends.
Book a room in the original hall for the period character; book in the east wing for the super-king Hypnos cashmere mattress, walk-in shower and wall-mounted TV by the bath
Why It Matters
One of the most awarded country house hotels in the North West. 4 AA Red Stars, 3 AA Rosette restaurant, Good Spa Guide 5 Bubble award. Green Tourism accredited. The spa — converted from the original estate stable block — is a genuine draw, not an afterthought. The Victorian dining room ceiling alone is worth a visit.
Rookery Hall is a Grade II-listed Georgian manor house built in 1816, sitting on 38 acres of wooded parkland and meadows bordered by the River Weaver. The main hall reads like a history lesson in sandstone and mahogany — ornamental ceilings, stained glass, marble fireplaces, a carved dining room ceiling featuring four crests, nine coronets and a frieze of winged cherubs. The 2007 east-wing extension added 39 executive bedrooms and conference suites, giving the place a dual personality: heritage grandeur in the original house, sharp contemporary finishes next door. Holds 4 AA Red Stars and a 3 AA Rosette restaurant. David Beckham reportedly proposed to Victoria Adams here in 1998 — a fun bit of trivia the hotel doesn't exactly hide.
