Luang Prabang
French-Lao colonial meets jungle glamping. Bold colors, carved wall panels, indigenous textiles, and safari-esque details sit alongside colonial furniture and Frette linens. No TVs in rooms. No elevators. Public spaces use natural ventilation instead of AC. The whole place leans into its forested, spiritual setting rather than fighting it.
The Hilltop Tents are a Rosewood signature — worth the stair climb for the mountain views and privacy
Why It Matters
Designed entirely by Bill Bensley, one of the most celebrated architects in luxury hospitality, each of the 23 accommodations honors a celebrated explorer of Laos. The hilltop tents — reached via 140 stairs — are genuinely unlike anything else in the Rosewood portfolio. Natural waterfalls run through the estate, a private waterfall dinner is an on-site signature, and the property sources over 80% of its restaurant ingredients locally.
Bill Bensley's most ambitious jungle project sits on the outskirts of Luang Prabang within the UNESCO-protected Nahm Dong Valley. Just 23 accommodations — rooms, suites, villas, and six extraordinary hilltop tents — spread across a forested hillside with natural waterfalls running through the grounds. This is small, intentional, and genuinely remote-feeling, while the historic city center is only about 10–15 minutes by tuk-tuk.

On Property
How you'll actually spend your days.
A guided walk through Luang Prabang's UNESCO-protected architecture with cultural specialist Francis Engelmann, who has spent three decades documenting the town's teak shutters, naga-adorned staircases, and Lao-French colonial buildings.
A deep dive into traditional Lao weaving in the Chomphet District with textile expert Dr. Linda McIntosh. The focus is on Lao silk, natural dyeing techniques, and the role of weaving in supporting women's independence in local villages.
Join monks at Wat Pa Phai for evening meditation practice with bilingual instruction. A quieting way to close the day.
A guided village walk through ancient temples and sacred shrines of Luang Prabang, with meditation under expert guidance.
A guided private alms-giving ceremony with monk Noi (formerly a monk for three years). Guests are taken to a temple to meditate before the dawn ceremony — a far more authentic experience than the crowded public tourist version in town. Followed by a morning market visit.
A half-day trip to the famous three-tiered Kuang Si Waterfall, including a picnic lunch.
Hands-on rice farming experience that follows the journey of rice from field to table, including rice-made snacks.
A partnered excursion to the ethical MandaLao Elephant Sanctuary — 150 forested hectares along the Nam Khan River where rescued elephants from logging are rehabilitated. Feed, bathe, and trek with the elephants. Founded by Prasop Tippreasert, 'the elephant father of Southeast Asia.'
A half-day journey by bike through local villages among mountains and valleys, with stops to meet two distinct ethnic communities — the Khmu and Lao Lum hill-tribes.
Sunset cocktail voyages on the Nam Khan and Mekong rivers, as well as immersive half-day cruises to the Pak Ou Caves. The boats are fitted with comfortable cushioned seating.
Morning yoga classes on an open-air platform set just above the Nam Dong river — a genuine highlight for wellness-minded guests.
