Why It Matters
This is the property that launched the entire Rosewood Hotels brand. President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Tennessee Williams were among early guests at the original estate. The Mansion Restaurant opened to national acclaim in 1980 and remains one of Dallas's most celebrated dining destinations. The Rosewood Mansion on Turtle Creek is, at its core, a 1925 Italian Renaissance manor that somehow became a hotel. Built for cotton magnate Sheppard King on a terraced 4.63-acre hillside in Uptown Dallas, it opened as a restaurant in 1980 and added 142 rooms in 1981. Locals simply call it The Mansion — and they mean it as the highest possible compliment. Designer Thomas Pheasant's interiors layer damask textiles, custom millwork, and hand-carved fireplaces over original stained-glass windows and marble floors. This is where the Rosewood Hotels story actually began.
