Miyakojima
Modern Japanese minimalism meets barefoot chic. Clean concrete lines, pale woods, textiles in watery greens and greys, sliding doors, organic-shaped mirrors. No lobby pomp — the architecture blends into the setting by design. Very slow-paced and contemplative. Not a party resort.

Why It Matters
Rosewood's Japan debut. An all-villa, all-private-pool resort on an island most travelers have never heard of, set on sacred Ryukyuan land that took years of community consultation before construction. Studio Piet Boon's five-year design project is one of the most thoughtfully embedded luxury builds in Asia. The managing director is an environmental scientist who keeps a pet turtle named Maru.
Rosewood's first Japan property opened March 2025 on a remote, previously undeveloped peninsula on Miyako Island's northwest coast — closer to Taipei than Tokyo. Designed by Netherlands-based Studio Piet Boon over five years, its 55 concrete villas and houses sit in earthy browns and clay tones that deliberately dissolve into the rugged Ryukyu limestone shoreline and white-sand beaches. Every unit has a private pool and unobstructed ocean views. This is barefoot chic done seriously: deeply quiet, nature-forward, and rooted in the island's Ryukyuan cultural heritage. Okinawa is one of the world's five 'blue zones' renowned for exceptional longevity, and the resort leans into that identity hard — from its longevity-themed cuisine to spa rituals drawn from local sacred festivals.

How you'll actually spend your days.
The native Adan tree has been woven by islanders for generations into tools, hats, baskets, and protective charms. Guests try their hand at weaving a turtle charm or basket with local artisans — a genuinely hands-on, low-tech, high-meaning activity.
Miyako Jofu is one of Japan's most prized textiles — a fine ramie fabric that requires extraordinary precision and patience. Guests work alongside local masters at the craft center and produce a handcrafted souvenir from one of Japan's intangible cultural heritage traditions.
Off-site workshop with Kinjo Pottery's master artisans exploring Tsuboya pottery — a 300-year-old tradition. Guests create their own piece decorated with Ryukyuan motifs: fish, peonies, and Shisa guardian lions.
Visit a local awamori distillery — Okinawa's ancient rice spirit — for a cave exploration and refined tasting session. The regional equivalent of whisky tourism, and a good window into Ryukyuan drinking culture.
Yoga sessions on the beach or by the pools, drawing on breath work and intentional movement in an outdoor setting. Part of the regular fitness and wellness schedule.
An island-ingredients cocktail class blending local spirits, plants, and stories from Miyako's eight islands. Craft, learn, and drink island-style.
Paddle through a serene mangrove forest near the resort as sunlight filters through the canopy. Guided, unhurried, and meditative — one of the better ways to start the day here.
Exclusive BBQ experience in your House villa, prepared by a private chef using seasonal local ingredients. Only available for guests staying in the Houses (Kuura, Kamii, Upra).
Private beach dinner under the stars, with Rosewood's culinary team showcasing Miyakojima's seasonal bounty. Available only during select months — inquire well in advance.
Fewer than 50 Miyako horses survive in the world. Guests can meet these rare island animals and participate in the resort's conservation efforts. A quiet, meaningful connection to the island's natural history.
Family-oriented daily activities for younger guests. Children's pool sections and daily programming. The resort also has a dedicated indoor play area.
Learn from a karate master in the place the martial art was first invented. Focuses on the philosophy of karate-do — balance, compassion, inner strength, and defense without harm — as much as physical technique.
Guided snorkel experience to swim with sea turtles in the crystal-clear waters off Miyakojima. Led by Managing Director Noriko Nakayama — an environmental scientist — or expert guides. Guests can also learn about the resort's sea turtle conservation efforts and, seasonally, witness nesting.
Step from the beach directly in front of Choma restaurant and into the Miyako Blue. Stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, and snorkeling are available at your own pace. Snorkeling guided excursions are available April to November only.
Hands-on Japanese cooking class at Choma. Guests learn fish-cutting techniques for sushi and the art of light tempura frying under the guidance of the resort's chefs. Recipes and ingredient context included.
